Forays into Rock-Americana: Delta Spirit+Ben Kweller
DELTA SPIRIT

Great performers. Dueling drum sets with a kick drum I could feel in my chest with a kick-ass homemade light wheel. Their excitement about selling out the Fillmore was contagious and the crowd was into it. The kicker was the finale...last song of the encore, lead singer is at the piano. He is playing along and then crawls on top of the piano (still playing), stands on the keyboard of the piano (now playing with his feet), climbs atop the piano, throws his hands in the air, star jumps from the piano to center stage, disappears to the side of the stage, returns with a fluffy white tail sticking out of his jeans, and finishes by tackling the rhythm guitarist down to the ground. And to think, a week ago I had never heard of them (thanks B for the enlightenment!).

BEN KWELLER

I also recently went to see Ben Kweller at the Great American. I always forget what a technique-ly adept singer he is and his great sense of humor. And what a baby face...
This isn't a great recording but I was impressed by the drummer's harmonies while keeping time...talk about multi-tasking. Ben Kweller had a great rapport with the audience--regaling us with stories of doing pastels in Taco Bell while eating the new dorito taco and echoing an audience heckler's attempts to get him to play a different song. He knows how to craft an awesome show and sound great live.
